Import a Picture

You are able to import .bmp files into Stitch & Motif Maker. I think this is the most difficult part of the program to understand.

The first thing to do is decide on your picture source. You may use clipart or a scanned picture or any graphic as long as it is in a bitmap format.

Before you import the picture, you must decide how many stitches and rows you wish to cover. Stitch & Motif Maker will size (stretch or reduce) the graphic to the size that you select.

If you want the picture to cover a large area, be sure that you have made your grid large enough.

To make the selection easier for Import, click Edit, Click Select Area.

Once the area is selected, click Edit, Click Import

Find your file and click OK.

Now the hard part. If you have used a scanned image, you are probably going to be very disappointed. Even at the finest handknitting gauge, we are still restricted by the rectangular shape of the knitted stitch.

Use the eyedropper to smooth your colors.

Remember that even in large Intarsia patterns, the pictures are stylized. In other words, you are creating interpretation of the picture, not a realistic painted rendition.
